Summary

The Director of Information Technology (IT) is responsible for the effective planning, organization and operation of information technology (IT) services and support across MESC. This individual oversees IT project coordination, resource management, supervision of IT staff, as well as communication with the management team, business unit leaders, and end-users. The Director of IT is also responsible for IT strategic and tactical planning, as well as identifying, selecting, and deploying the appropriate technology resources that will support organizational goals and objectives.

 

As a leader in the organization, the Director of IT will model the intent of the Maskwacis Declaration on Education and the core values of; Wahkotowin, Iyiniw Mamotohnehickikan, Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin, and Nehiyawewin. This is evident by:

  • Ensuring that decisions are made to the ultimate benefit of Maskwacis students.

  • Assisting the Superintendent and the Board to ensure that all students benefits from their treaty right to quality education.

  • Respecting Cree language, spirituality and traditions within the Education Authority.

  • Providing Maskwacis leadership (the Cree way) in all matters relating to education in the Maskwacis Schools - consensus-building, creating a dialogue with stakeholders, empowering leadership in the system.

Primary Responsibilities

Ensure MESC’s IT needs are met

  • Direct operations in executing IT tasks according to a documented schedule that meets or exceeds organizational needs.

  • Approve all organizational requirements prior to implementing a technical solution.

  • Participate in all hardware and software evaluations and maintain vendor contracts.

  • Analyze complex business needs presented by MESC staff and recommend technical solutions.

  • Ensure the consistency and maintainability of existing applications by creating, maintaining, and enforcing standards and procedures for implementing technical solutions.

  • Perform liaison duties between various members of the management team and staff in relation to IT use, problems, and solutions.

  • Provide support for all hardware and software problems reported, documenting problems and solutions as required.

  • Identify opportunities and recommend solutions that will enhance or improve current business processes.

  • Support and ensure operating viability of LAN (Local Area Network) for all hours of operation; routinely tune systems for optimum performance.

  • Plan, develop, and manage all IT services, programs, and support throughout the enterprise.

  • Ensure software, hardware and network installs, re-installs, upgrades, moves, changes and relocations are made when necessary and as required.

  • Research, design, and implement the appropriate technologies to support and improve corporate communications, access to information, and end-user productivity.

  • Liaise with vendors and service providers to ensure efficient and cost-effective acquisition of technology purchases; oversee warranties and service agreements.

  • Conduct capacity planning for network bandwidth, storage requirements, messaging, web sites, and other applications.

  • Create and deliver business cases for technology acquisitions.

  • Create status reports as required; present findings to management.

 

Guide IT projects to successful completion

  • Produce a detailed timeline for each technical solution release and implement effective project control by monitoring the progress of the solution and reporting the status.

  • Follow up on faulty hardware and software purchases by pursuing warranty advantage through distributors and manufacturers.

  • Oversee project management for IT-related undertakings, including clear capture of business requirements, provision of functional deliverables, milestone planning, and project post mortems.

  • Ensure that applicable project management practices are followed throughout project life cycles.

Oversee IT staff

  • Direct and prioritize the workload of subordinate personnel.

  • Provide coordination for IT personnel in their day-to-day responsibilities.

  • Assist senior management with the direction and facilitation of IT strategic and tactical planning.

  • Assist in developing and managing a budget for technology, IT services, and personnel.

  • Plan end-user training as required.

Additional Responsibilities  

  • Stay informed on new or emerging trends and technologies that provide clear benefits to the organization.

  • Provide guidance on projects or special initiatives.

  • Assist in the writing of grants, RFPs, RFIs, and RFQs

  • Provide oversight of IT contacts and contractors

  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

 

Skills and Knowledge

  • Good overall knowledge of programming concepts, software development cycles, and associated tools and platforms.

  • Proficiency with online databases.

  • Proficiency with VPN networks, firewalls, encryption, and other aspects of network security technologies.

  • Sound leadership, staff management, and teambuilding skills.

  • Ability to explain technical concepts and theories to non-technical audiences.

  • High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.

  • Strong negotiation and prioritization skills.

  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization.

  • Knowledge of applicable IT laws and regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or an acceptable combination of education and relevant experience required.

  • Minimum five (5) years of direct work experience in an IT management capacity required.

  • Advanced overall knowledge of networking, operating systems, and server architectures.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, PowerSchool, and some of the following, Dossier, Atrieve and other applications required.

 

Working Conditions

  • Travel may be required.

  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations.

  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computers and peripherals.

  • Overtime as required.
