Tasks

1. Supervise and co-ordinate the workers assigned to the tempering line, directing loading, furnace operation, unloading and inspection, and checking finished glass against order specifications.

2. Plan the daily tempering schedule against customer orders and installation dates, sequence batches by glass thickness and size, and assign the day's work to the crew.

3. Set the tempering furnace controls — heating time, set-point temperature and quench air pressure — for each glass thickness and product type, and confirm the furnace is at operating condition before production begins each day.

4. Monitor production on the tempering line, check tempered product against quality standards for bow and warp, roller wave, edge quality and fragmentation, and direct operators to adjust settings or rework pieces that do not meet specification.

5. Diagnose furnace and conveyor problems, provide technical direction to operators, and change loading patterns and handling practices to reduce breakage and improve yield; recommend process and equipment improvements to management and report faults requiring service.

6. Set the acceptance requirements for glass entering the tempering line, and reject pieces with unsuitable edges or dimensions, returning them to cutting and edge-working before tempering.

7. Record daily tempering output, breakage, rework and furnace downtime, and prepare production summaries for management.

8. Train workers on the tempering line in furnace operating procedures, safe glass handling, hot-surface and burn hazards, use of personal protective equipment, and company policies.

9. Enforce safe operation on the tempering line, including glass-handling and lifting practices, machine guarding and lockout during maintenance, and applicable health and safety requirements.

10. Order tempering consumables, tools and protective equipment and track quantities on hand.
